Curriculum and Instruction
Ashley River Creative Arts Elementary School is an arts integrated schools. Our teachers teach through and with the arts to increase student engagement, motivation, growth, and achievement. We follow the South Carolina state standards for each grade level, as well as the state's Visual and Performing Arts standards.
Students are ARCAE are provided with the opportunity to learn in two Special Area classes a day. Our Special Area classes are arts-based. These include Art, Music, Cultural Arts, STEAM, Media, Theater, Movement, and Physical Education. Our students in first through fifth grades have the opportunity to register for optional classes in Ballet or Strings. More information will be shared on how to register if interested. In addition, all students in fourth and fifth grades have the opportunity to participate in performing or service based clubs. More information will be shared with families when the school year begins on club options.
Our teachers at ARCAE are top-notch. Teams collaborate to create thematic units of study that integrate English Language Arts, Social Studies, Science, and Visual and Performing Arts standards. Below is a list of ELA and Math curriculum utilized at each grade level.

Kindergarten, 1st, and 2nd Grades: CKLA Skills Block, Heggertys, Thematic Units of Study supported with CKLA Knowledge materials, Number Corner, Bridges
3rd, 4th, 5th Grades: Thematic Units of Study supported with CKLA Knowledge materials, Number Corner, Bridges
Exceptional Children: Unique Learning System (ULS), Number Worlds, Voyager Passport
All students in grades CD through 5th grade receive explicit social-emotional instruction once a week using the Second Step Curriculum.
